Have my BRZ listed for 24k$ with 24k miles on it. hoping to get about 22k$ for it because that's around what they were selling for at the time it was listed, and its what I need to get something that doesn't make me hate life for the next few years until I'm done with school. now the prices have dropped online and I'm thinking I may not get more than 17k$ for it despite that being in the same price range as sme of them with rebuilt and salvage titles (there's quite a few) but lower miles. On top of that I'm not quite sure how to Handle a transaction larger than a few thousand dollars as a private party. I dont want to take a check or cashiers check but that's a large amount for just cash it seems. The reason I dont want to deal with checks is because they may not clear, and cashiers checks can clear temporarily when they shouldn't have just to loose the money from my account after I've handed over the keys.

Do it at your bank. If they're serious they won't object. You get cash and sign the title over inside a bank where there's usually an armed guard. Also, they'll get a money order or cashiers check or whatever the bank person says is best.

What Funktheduck said. Do it at your bank. Bank, bank, bank.

That amount of cash isn't that large if you think it will be unwieldy. Just run to the bank right afterwords. It should all fit in your hand even if it's all 20's. Have you considered Carmax by any chance, that'll be a much more secure way to sell your car if your concerned.

My housemate flips cars - one thing he runs into is folks trying to finance a used car. I think banks will only give a loan for the blue book value of the car, so the buyer has to make up the balance with cash...which they're unable to do. It's led to a lot of unfinished transactions, so now he only does cash, or cashiers checks at the bank...
Keep an eye out for folks that want to pay using PayPal, as well - there's some sort of scam going on, where they have you ship the car and they send the payment, but it doesn't go through so you wind up with no money and no car.

That's a lot of 20s. $17k equals 850 of them to be exact. Nope I'll be at the bank with that kind of dough.

meet up, agree on a price, go to their bank and have them cut you a cashiers check.

When did prices drop? $5k is a lot of depreciation! I mean, carmax will probably give around 20.

Winter time price drop in the private market I'm assuming.

If the private market is at 17K for a BRZ you might as well sell it to a dealer and not deal with any of the BS that comes with large sum private sales.

I'm considering it now. I need to sell it by next month due to financial reasons, the issue is I don't want to be low balled to the point where i cant afford something decent.

The scam is they "send the payment," it shows up in your account but in escrow because PayPal has a holding period, they have somebody pick up your car, then they yoink the payment and leave you out to dry.
I had maybe four or five attempts to use that scam when my '96 Corvette was up for sale. Each time the buyer sounded legit, but as soon as it got to the point where the buyer should ask to come look at the car they tell you that they accept you at your word and want to know if you accept PayPal.
And they are always located in Washington state...

Get a teller or cashier's check. Those are guaranteed funds. When the bank cuts the check, it puts a 'hold' on the funds until the check is either returned to the bank(by owner) or it is cashed.

Also if you do it at your bank, they will have a notary public and they will make sure the funds are there, the buyer and seller are both who they say they are and so the transaction for everyone will go smoother.
